Fired Worker Fightback
&
National Workers Conference Organizing Meeting

UAW Local 551 is honored to host this dual meeting Saturday June 17, 2017 beginning at 5:30 PM.
Fired Workers Fightback Speakout
Sarah Chambers is an outspoken member of Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). She is an award winning Special Education teacher at Maria Saucedo Academy. She spoke out about Chicago Public Schools (CPS) breaking Illinois Special Education laws. April 6, 2017 she was suspended by CPS and the board is seeking to fire Chambers because of her role in vocally defending students.
Chicago residents are encouraged to call their alderman and ask them to write a letter to CPS CEO Forrest Claypool, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel supporting Sarah’s reinstatement as a teacher of special needs children. So far 17 of Chicago’s 50 aldermen/women have done so. It’s time to apply some working class pressure on the other 33.
Erek Slater is a union steward for a CTA bus garage on the North Side of Chicago. He is also an Executive Board Member of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 241. In February of 2016 he was fired for investigating a contract violation by CTA management. An International workers’ campaign won Erek reinstatement with full back pay.
A speakout is much more than two stories. Join us at 5:30 PM June 17th so we can share our struggles and talk about solutions.
National Workers Conference planning meeting
After the speakout we will be holding a planning meeting for the October 6-8 National Workers Conference to Organize the Fightback and Build a Solidarity Network. All are welcome to stay and help with this important step forward for the labor movement.
